The quartet of officers quickly returned to TAC HQ and were mostly silent en route. Conveyed by a heavily-armored aircar with an escort of Metal Legion aerospace fighters, Xi felt decidedly uneasy during the trip. It was difficult to ignore the strong precautions General Pushkin had taken to safeguard their trip, which suggested two things that unnerved Xi.

First, that there was a legitimate chance the Terran Armor Corps had enemies on New America who might take action against them. In principle, this wasn’t something that overly concerned her, but the reality of wondering whether a surface-to-air missile might be lurking in their flight path was far from a welcome experience.

The more daunting revelation was that even as the lowest-ranking member of the group, the newly-minted major was a valuable enough asset to the Metal Legion that she was worth protecting.

Just two years earlier, Xi Bao had been a Tier One felon serving a multi-decade prison sentence for data theft and other virtual crimes. She was considered so dangerous that she had been confined to an eight-by-ten concrete box and deprived of access to outside communication devices. But now she was apparently considered so important to Terran security that a quartet of Viper aerospace fighters flew an offset diamond escort of her aircar.

I’ve just traded one locked box for another, she mused.

She left those thoughts behind as the aircar descended to TAC HQ, and soon the quartet found themselves in the central transit space of the Metal Legion’s headquarters.

“I’ll be blunt,” Pushkin said after they reached the safety of Legion HQ and the doors had closed behind them. “This is an important operation, perhaps more important than Brick Top.”

Xi’s brow furrowed. “But Jem...” she started, referring to the entity intelligence who was a critical ally in the fight against Jemmin. “How so, General?”

“Colonel Jenkins was right about Admiral Zhao. He is a good man.” Pushkin sighed as he assumed the head position at the war room’s central table. “But he also views Armor Corps as a rival to be contended with, not an obstacle to be removed…or even a friend to be assisted during a time of need. It is my belief that Admiral Zhao has an eye on the highest political offices, and that he intends to use the Metal Legion as leverage to acquire the position he seeks.”

“You think he wants to be President?” Jenkins asked in surprise.

“Doubtful,” Pushkin allowed. “At least, not yet. The court-martial you two underwent was anything but ordinary. It was theater, and well-done theater at that,” he admitted. “There is nothing that expressly prohibits an active-duty Terran officer from pursuing political office, although it is rarely done for too many reasons to mention. The point is that he is testing the waters by seeing just how much influence he can muster. He knew the positive sentiment regarding being freed from alien control had value. He came through as a hero. So far, he has managed to manipulate the Fleet shipyards into doing precisely what he said they would: refitting a handful of our mothballed hulls.
